N* Cookbook of Sporting Tastes (U.S. Naval Academy) 1987

I was a little surprised that the U.S. Navy put out a community cookbook but I was happy to find it in a lot of books from an estate sale. The named contributors all had their connection to the Naval Academy listed–Vida Benson, Volunteer Naval Academy Gift Shop; Navy wives with their husband’s rank; Rosemary Maersch, Former Sports Promotion Director. Even Nancy Reagen, who shared President Reagan’s Favorite Macaroni and Cheese listed her connection–being married to the president.

Some illustrations–one is of the Navy mascot eating a giant leaf–and a wide variety of recipes from soufflé to several fruit salads,, quick breads, Jell-O in many forms, barbecue, and desserts.

This book had the receipt tucked inside–3/29/87 and it was $6.95 which seems a little steep for 1987! I’ve bought new community cookbooks in 2023 for $5-10.

A recipe update of Cheryl Smith’s salmon croquettes from this book appears in my grant project cookbook. Limited copies are available for the cost of shipping.
