Sharing the Loaves and Fishes compiled by Vashon Presbyterian Church Vashon Island, Washington 1997
Vashon Island is a tiny rural island in Puget Sound that is only accessible by ferry. I couldn’t resist buying a very affordable lot of 8 community cookbooks and a music book(!) from Vashon when I saw them on eBay.
This book was put out by the church to help pay for their expansion goals.
All of the contributors are named and some recipes have fun subtitles like Jan Terreau’s Tennessee Sweet Potato Casserole (The Dish That Taught John Neal to Eat Sweet Potatoes) which are always my favorite things to find. A truly wide variety of recipes from pasta dishes to souffles to many desserts from Soda Cracker Pie (Judy Martin) to Blueberry Sour Cream Pie (Sheryl Lehman). Sheryl Lehman’s mother (I love when the books explain the connection between various contributors) Geneva Luinenberg contributed Jan Haagel Bars. I’m also fascinated with Sharon Waldo’s Whipped Cream Sauce (Serve with Ham).
I adapted Sheryl Lehman’s rhubarb cake recipe from this book.
