1979 Brownstown Banner Cookbook: A Collection of Our Reader’s Favorite Recipes
The Brownstown Banner seems to have been a newspaper in Indiana. I can’t resist a newspaper recipe collection from readers. This one is quite slight but there are a good number of recipes. The recipes all have the name of the contributor and their hometown (and occasionally, additionally, the fact that they are on Rt 1 or Rt 2, which was interesting and I’d like to know more about the importance of making that distinction).
Quite a few casseroles but also a number of salads and desserts including a recipe for what sounds like a cute layer sherbet that looks like a watermelon. There are some pickling recipes and thankfully they are for refrigerator pickles not actually canning recipes which is generally much safer. I would not keep any food “indefinitely” however.
I am pretty sure the “mangos” called for in the relish refer to bell peppers which I’ve seen in a few midwestern recipes.
I am fascinated by Mrs. Moon Collins, Tampico’s Sausage Cake which calls for both pork sausage, nutmeg, cloves, a full cup of coffee, nuts, sugar, raisins, and a suggestion to add candied fruit to make it a fruitcake. I don’t think I am brave enough to try that.
Melinda Nolen (age 6), Anderson Rt 1 contributed a recipe for Soggy Devil’s Food Cake which she swears is moist and not as soggy as it sounds.
