Favorite Recipes of Mon River Valley Chapter Sweet Adelines 1972 (Mon Valley, Pennsylvania)
I didn’t find out much about this group except one obituary of Marie C. Gregory which stated she enjoyed singing in the group. Mon Valley is a term for a collection of towns outside Pittsburgh so this group probably drew from large area.
I get the impression it was either a relatively small group or that there were some women who were really into cooking and dominated the book or they didn’t get a ton of contributions–there are a lot of repeat names which is slightly unusual. There were a lot the members of the board of directors, the board and there was a cookbook chairman listed so it couldn’t have been that small of a group.
There are some “calorie counting” recipes (mostly contributed by Betty Tantlinger in nearly every regular chapter and in an entire “low calorie” chapter) which are not my favorite to see but very popular in the 1970s. I love cabbage but this scramble sounds a little grim.
They aren’t all diet-focused, thankfully! There are the usual mains and desserts.
There were some dishes that were a little more unusual–Scotch Clootie Dumplings (Jeanette Whyel), and quite a few Ukrainian dishes contributed by Velia Melencheck.
