Kitchen Magic compiled by Usher Board of Pilgrim Baptist Church St Paul, Minnesota 1959
The church has an interesting history–from Wikipedia “The Pilgrim Baptist Church …. houses the first Black Baptist congregation in Saint Paul. The congregation was founded on November 15, 1866, by Reverend Robert Hickman and a group of escaped slaves from Boone County, Missouri. They were smuggled up the Mississippi River on the Steamer War Eagle with the help of Union Soldiers and the Underground Railroad. The current building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1928.”
There is a photograph of the church at the beginning of the book along with a list of the Usher Board members and officers but little other information. They thank the home economists who worked on it (I would have liked to have known more about that) and Mullins Manufacturing Co for the “Youngstown Steel Kitchens” cover photo. They also thank the National Live Stock and Meat Board, US Department of Agriculture, Energine Cleaning Fluid Co, Armour and Co, and Wheat Flour Institute with no other notes or explanation.
The main dish recipes were pretty varied from Mrs. David Yarusso’s Italian Meatballs to Hatsume Akaki’s Beef Sukiyaki, Mrs La Marr Smith’s Chicken a la King, and Mrs. Esperanza Trejo’s Tamales.
Some of the recipes are credited to people with far-off addresses with no explanation.
Lots of sweet recipes of a wide variety.
Lots of generic, stock cooking/entertaining info in the front and local ads in the back.
