Island Cookery: A Book of Favorite Recipes compiled by Soroptimist-International of Vashon-Maury, Vashon Island, Washington 1994
Vashon Island is a small island in Puget Sound that is only accessible by ferry. According to the forward it is also known as Vashon-Maury Island and that people who don’t like island life generally stay three years before moving to the “‘mainland’–also known as the ‘other world'”.
The book opens with thanking the contributors to the cookbook and explained that they did make some changes and that some submitted recipes were “incomplete or illegible”. It somewhat strangely says that when the recipes were unsigned they have “taken the liberty of giving fictitious names to those”. I honestly have never seen that before! They sound like a group of characters. I think the fictitious names are the ones in quotes like “Fernheath Larry” and his recipe for Spicy Prune Yam Bread.
Some of the contributors are small business owners on the island and their business is listed. The forward mentions anecdotes but I do not see many although there are some recipe headnotes. More breakfast items than usual–from pancakes to scones and muffins and a good number of candy, jam and preserves recipes.
