Delectables from the Dunes compiled by Members and Friends of the Ogden Dunes Community Church 1979
There is a little poem from the “Ogden Dunes Prime Timers” that I think any recipe developer, food writer, food blogger or anyone who has read the comments section of a recipe can relate to.
The group thanks members and friends of the church for submitting recipes. I would think any proceeds from the book went to the church but that isn’t mentioned.
Most of the recipes are on the short side but are pretty varied if heavy on the desserts. A larger than average amount of cheese recipes from soufflés to sandwich filling.
I’m intrigued by Sophie Milevich’s Serbian Apple Slices which has you make a dough “like a pie crust”, line a 9×12 inch dish then fill it with apples and seal it with more dough “like a pie crust” which does sound like a pie but the wording implies that it is not a pie. Maybe because of the size? I think we’d call this a slab pie now. There are eggs and sour cream in the dough. When I google “Serbian Apple Slices” I come up with “Lazy Pie” which looks similar and is described as kind of a simplified strudel. This is when I wish more community cookbooks left space for a little explanation of the dish. Not all need them (Helen Michael’s Blender Cheese Souffle is pretty self-explanatory) but some do!
There are some illustrations that look bespoke but that I have seen recently in another cookbook on the dividers. I’m not sure about the cover. Large selections of stock “helpful hints” and other tips and content.
