Tried and True Recipes That Measure Up compiled by the Covington, GA East Metro Christian Women’s Club 2005 “only the best make the cut”. I did not see a mention of where the funds from the book would benefit so I would guess it was the organization’s general fund.
The cookbook opens with an essay by Cherry Patton, the 2005 Chairman about the importance of passing down recipes which I felt gave the book a real personal touch.
This book has a thick, glossy cover and color section dividers which makes it stand out against most of the books in my collection. There were no other illustrations.
There weren’t too many clues about the organization in the book. It doesn’t seem to have been affiliated with just one church as the woman seem to be from various areas around Covington and no church is listed. I couldn’t find a definitive current website or any information online either–there are some women’s groups in Covington, GA but it’s not clear if they are newer iterations of this one.
The contributers were very careful to credit who they got the recipe from which I always like to see. I always wish there were more details and headnotes–who is this person to you? When did you serve this dish?
The recipes leaned towards the simple but there were a few recipes that I haven’t seen elsewhere like the above potato cake and Nan King (McDonough, GA)’s Fig Cobbler with suggested Cheddar Pastry.
Who are the Coppernolls? And Iva Rice also contributed some recipes herself!
